Ace of Spades, by Motörhead

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

If you like to gamble, I tell you I’m your man
You win some, lose some, it’s – all – the same to me
The pleasure is to play, it makes no difference what you say
I don’t share your greed, the only card I need is
The Ace Of Spades
The Ace Of Spades

Playing for the high one, dancing with the devil,
Going with the flow, it’s all a game to me,
Seven or Eleven, snake eyes watching you,
Double up or quit, double stakes or split,
The Ace Of Spades
The Ace Of Spades

You know I’m born to lose, and gambling’s for fools,
But that’s the way I like it baby,
I don’t wanna live forever,
And don’t forget the joker!

Pushing up the ante, I know you’ve got to see me,
Read ‘em and weep, the dead man’s hand again,
I see it in your eyes, take one look and die,
The only thing you see, you know it’s gonna be,
The Ace Of Spades
The Ace Of Spades

For the lyrics, Lemmy, the lead singer, said he “used gambling metaphors, mostly cards and dice – when it comes to that sort of thing, I’m more into the one-armed bandits actually, but you can’t really sing about spinning fruit, and the wheels coming down”.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

Is this the real life-
Is this just fantasy-
Caught in a landslide-
No escape from reality-
Open your eyes
Look up to the skies and see-
I’m just a poor boy, I need no sympathy-
Because I’m easy come,easy go,
A little high, little low,
Anyway the wind blows, doesn’t really matter to me,
To me

Mama, just killed a man,
Put a gun against his head,
Pulled my trigger, now he’s dead,
Mama, life had just begun,
But now I’ve gone and thrown it all away-
Mama ooo,
Didn’t mean to make you cry-
If I’m not back again this time tomorrow-
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters-

Too late, my time has come,
Sends shivers down my spine-
Body’s aching all the time,
Goodbye everybody-I’ve got to go-
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth-
Mama ooo- (any way the wind blows)
I don’t want to die,
I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all-

I see a little silhouetto of a man,
Scaramouche, scaramouche will you do the Fandango-
Thunderbolt and lightning-very very frightening me-
Galileo, Galileo,
Galileo Galileo
Galileo figaro-Magnifico-
But I’m just a poor boy and nobody loves me-
He’s just a poor boy from a poor family-
Spare him his life from this monstrosity-
Easy come easy go-, will you let me go-
Bismillah! No- we will not let you go-let him go-
Bismillah! We will not let you go-let him go
Bismillah! We will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go-let me go
Will not let you go let me go
No, no, no, no, no, no, no-
Mama mia, mama mia, mama mia let me go-
Beelzebub has a devil put aside for me, for me, for me-

So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye-
So you think you can love me and leave me to die-
Oh baby-Can’t do this to me baby-
Just gotta get out-just gotta get right outta here-
Nothing really matters,
Anyone can see,
Nothing really matters, nothing really matters to me,
Any way the wind blows….

This is rather self-explanatory- the singer has murdered someone, and is on death row, awaiting execution. In the operatic portion of the song towards the end, he appeals. It is rejected, and he fades away… Here are some meanings of some of those names:

Scaramouche – originally ‘Scarramuccia’, one of the stock figures in Italian Commedia del’Arte theatre; a swashbuckling beau dressed in black who was never quite as brave as he pretended

Figaro – a Spanish first name, best known from the witty and rebellious barber in Beaumarchais’ novels Le Barbier de Séville and Le Mariage de Figaro, both later made into operas

silhouetto – Italian for silhouette, an outline seen against a lighter background, named, for unknown reasons, after Etienne de Silhouette, 18th century French finance minister. The cutting of silhouette shapes and profiles became a fad.

Bismillah – an Arabic interjection meaning ‘in the name of God’

Beelzebub – chief spirit of evil, the name means ‘lord of the flies’ and was first used for a Philistine god. Milton uses the name for Satan’s right-hand fallen angel in Paradise Lost. The name is sometimes used as a synonym for ‘Satan’.

magnifico – Italian word for magnificent or, by extension, a Venetian nobleman or any high ranking person

fandango – a Spanish courtship dance in triple time, performed by a couple, often employing castanets

Galileo – Galileo Galilei, Italian astronomer and philosopher (1564 – 1642)

A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall by Bob Dylan

Monday, May 9th, 2011

Oh, where have you been, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, where have you been, my darling young one?
I’ve stumbled on the side of twelve misty mountains,
I’ve walked and I’ve crawled on six crooked highways,
I’ve stepped in the middle of seven sad forests,
I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans,
I’ve been ten thousand miles in the mouth of a graveyard,
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, and it’s a hard,
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

Oh, what did you see, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what did you see, my darling young one?
I saw a newborn baby with wild wolves all around it
I saw a highway of diamonds with nobody on it,
I saw a black branch with blood that kept drippin’,
I saw a room full of men with their hammers a-bleedin’,
I saw a white ladder all covered with water,
I saw ten thousand talkers whose tongues were all broken,
I saw guns and sharp swords in the hands of young children,
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard,
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warnin’,
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world,
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazin’,
Heard ten thousand whisperin’ and nobody listenin’,
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughin’,
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter,
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley,
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard,
And it’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

Oh, who did you meet, my blue-eyed son?
Who did you meet, my darling young one?
I met a young child beside a dead pony,
I met a white man who walked a black dog,
I met a young woman whose body was burning,
I met a young girl, she gave me a rainbow,
I met one man who was wounded in love,
I met another man who was wounded with hatred,
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard,
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

Oh, what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
Oh, what’ll you do now, my darling young one?
I’m a-goin’ back out ‘fore the rain starts a-fallin’,
I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest,
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty,
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters,
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison,
Where the executioner’s face is always well hidden,
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten,
Where black is the color, where none is the number,
And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it,
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it,
Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’,
But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’,
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard,
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall.

Bob Dylan wrote this song in 1962 in Chip Monck’s apartment in the basement of the Village Gate (now The Village Theater) on the corner of Bleecker and Thompson Streets in Greenwich Village.  This song is about the aftermath of a nuclear war.  The song was written at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the bleakness of the lyrics reflects the worried mood of the time.

However, the meaning behind the words has stayed relevant throughout the years as they seem to have a broader sweep in their descriptions of injustice, suffering and warfare.  Though Dylan has denied that this song is about anything more than simple rain falling down, it’s obvious that he is not being straight-forward.  This is not an uncommon thing for writers to do, aka Pink Floyd denying that Dark Side of the Moon had anything to do with The Wizard of Oz.

Adam’s Song by Blink 182

Monday, May 9th, 2011

I never thought I’d die alone.
I laughed the loudest who’d have known?
I traced the cord back to the wall,
no wonder it was never plugged in at all.
I took my time, I hurried up,
the choice was mine. I didn’t think enough.
I’m too depressed to go on, you’ll be sorry when I’m gone.

I never conquered rarely came,
16 just held such better days,
days when I still felt alive. We couldn’t wait to get outside,
the world was wide too late to try.
The tour was over, we’d survived.
I couldn’t wait till I got home to pass the time in my room alone.

I never thought I’d die alone,
another six months, I’ll be unknown.
Give all my things to all my friends.
You’ll never set foot in my room again.
You’ll close it off, board it up.

Remember the time that I spilled the cup of apple juice in the hall.
Please tell mom this is not her fault.
I never conquered, rarely came
but tomorrow holds such better days.
Days when I can still feel alive.
When I can’t wait to get outside.
The world is wide, the time goes by.
The tour is over, I’ve survived.
I can’t wait until I get home to pass the time in my room alone.

Blink-182 bass player Mark Hoppus wrote this when he was in a state of depression about being on tour and away from his family.  Mark read a letter someone sent him as an email, that a kid wrote before he committed suicide to his parents.

The lyrics, “I traced the cord back to the wall, no wonder it was never plugged in at all” were inspired when guitarist Tom Delonge was playing in his garage and he and his amp were in a puddle. Luckily, the amp was not plugged in or he could have been electrocuted. (thanks Joe P. – Chicago, Illinois)

The line “I took my time, I hurried up, the choice was mine, I didn’t think enough” refers to the 1991 Nirvana’s song “Come As You Are.” There, the line is, “Take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours, don’t be late.”

It should be noted that in the song, Adam ends up NOT committing suicide, but learns to enjoy the things that he once viewed as negatives in his life.

Walk On The Ocean by Toad The Wet Sprocket

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

We spotted the ocean at the head of the trail
Where are we going, so far away
And somebody told me that this is the place
Where everythings better, everythings safe
Walk on the ocean
Step on the stones
Flesh becomes water
Wood becomes bone
And half and hour later we packed up our things
We said we’d send letters and all those little things
And they knew we were lying but they smiled just the same
It seemed theyd already forgotten we’d came

Now we’re back at the homestead
Where the air makes you choke
And people don’t know you
And trust is a joke
We don’t even have pictures
Just memories to hold
That grow sweeter each season
As we slowly grow old

Despite popular belief that this song was inspired by a Young Life camp in British Columbia called Malibu Club, “Walk on the Ocean” was based more on a trip to the San Juan Islands, (Orcas island in particular) Washington than anything else, but was more than anything just a five-minute temporary lyric for a demo that just happened to stick.

The Adventure by Angels and Airwaves

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

I wanna have the same last dream again
The one where I wake up and I’m alive
Just as the four walls close me within
My eyes are open up with pure sunlight
I’m the first to know
My dearest friends
Even if your hope has burned with time
Anything that is dead shall be re-grown
And your vicious pain, your warning sign
You will be fine

Hey oh here I am
And here we go
Life’s waiting to begin

Any type of love it will be shown
Like every single tree reach for the sky
If you’re gonna fall
I’ll let you know
That I will pick you up
Like you for I
I felt this thing
I can’t replace
When everyone was working for this goal
Where all the children left without a trace
Only to come back as pure as gold
To recite this all

Hey oh here I am
And here we go
Life’s waiting to begin
Tonight
Hey oh here I am
And here we go
Life’s waiting to begin
Tonight
Hey oh here I am
And here we go
Life’s waiting to begin

I can not live
I can’t breathe
Unless you do this with me
I can not live
I can’t breathe
Unless you do this with me
I can not live
I can’t breathe
Unless you do this with me
I can not live
I can’t breathe
Unless you do this with me
I can not live
I can’t breathe
Unless you do this with me
I can not live
I can’t breathe
Unless you do this with me

Hey oh, here I am (do this with me)
Here we go
life’s waiting to begin (do this with me)
Hey oh, here I am (do this with me)
Here we go
life’s waiting to begin
life’s waiting to begin

On February 8, in a Rolling Stone interview, when asked about this song, Tom DeLonge said: “The song was inspired by a friend whose marriage was kind of falling apart. It touched me so deeply that I was up one night crying for him — I felt so hurt.”

Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

There’s a lady who’s sure
All that glitters is gold
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven
An’ when she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for

Oohoohooh oohoohoohoohooh
And she’s buying a stairway to heaven

There’s a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
‘Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook
There’s a songbird that sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven

An’ I think you can see that
Ohh

And it makes me wonder, sure does
Oh hoh hoh, hohooh ohoohohooh yes sir

There’s a feelin’ I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who stand looking

Ah hah. Ah hah
Ah hah. Ah hah. Ahhhahhohoohohooh
Ohoohohooh
Ohoohohoohohohoh

And it’s whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
A-then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter

Does anybody remember laughter?

Baby, oh yeah
Just give it to me, give it to me, give it to me

Sure does, sure does

But I got some good news, listen…

If there’s a bustle in your hedgerow
Don’t be alarmed now
It’s just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
And there’s still time to change the road you’re on, I hope so

Oohh, baby baby darlin
Thank ya darlin’
Thank ya darlin’
Thank ya darlin’
Thank ya…

A-wait a minute, a-wait a minute

Your head is hummin’ and it won’t go
In case ya don’t know
The piper’s callin’ you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whisperin’ wind

Ohh hah hahhahhh

(Guitar Solo)

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our souls
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold, yeah
And if-a you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all is one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll, not to roll
Don’t make me roll

An’ she’s buying a stairway to heaven
Ahhahhhhohhahhoh

This song is about the dangers of drug addiction.  In this case, the drug is specifically heroine.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond by Pink Floyd

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Remember when you were young
You shone like the sun
Shine on you crazy diamond
Now there’s a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
Shine on you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom
Blown on the steel breeze
Come on you target for faraway laughter
Come on you stranger
You legend
You martyr
And shine

You reached for the secret too soon
You cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night
And exposed in the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome
With random percision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on you raver
You seer of visions
Come on you painter
You piper
You prisoner
And shine

Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far
Shine on you crazy diamond
Pile on many more layers
And I’ll be joining you there
Shine on you crazy diamond
And we’ll bask in the shadow
Of yesterday’s triumph
Sail on the steel breeze
Come on you boy child
You winner and loser
Come on you miner for truth and delusion
And shine

Shine on You Crazy Diamond is a 9-part composition by Pink Floyd.  As an interesting note, Steel Breeze is a band who took their name from “steel breeze” referenced in the lyrics of Shine on You Crazy Diamond.

Saving Me by Nickelback

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Prison gates won’t open up for me
On these hands and knees I’m crawlin’
Oh, I reach for you
Well I’m terrified of these four walls
These iron bars can’t hold my soul in
All I need is you
Come please I’m callin’
And oh I scream for you
Hurry I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’

[Chorus:]
Show me what it’s like
To be the last one standing
And teach me wrong from right
And I’ll show you what I can be
Say it for me
Say it to me
And I’ll leave this life behind me
Say it if it’s worth saving me

Heaven’s gates won’t open up for me
With these broken wings I’m fallin’
And all I see is you
These city walls ain’t got no love for me
I’m on the ledge of the eighteenth story
And oh I scream for you
Come please I’m callin’
And all I need from you
Hurry I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’

[Chorus]

Hurry I’m fallin’

All I need is you
Come please I’m callin’
And oh, I scream for you
Hurry I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’, I’m fallin’

[Chorus]

Hurry I’m fallin’

This song is about a man who has the horrifying ability to see timers over people’s heads that tell him when they will all die.  The music video is a MUST-SEE to help understand the lyrics:  A man is saved by a random stranger before he blindly steps onto the street and almost gets struck by a bus. He begins to see timers above the heads of other people, but he appears not to have one of his own. He attempts to figure out what the timers represent, yet he is unable to until an old woman’s reaches 0:00:00 and she dies. He makes the connection that the numbers within the timers are an indicator of how long the people have to live. At the end of the video, he manages to save a woman’s life from getting crushed by a falling stone-statue as she approaches her (her time had been close to 0:00:00); it is then that the woman begins to see timers over people’s heads. Although not explicitly presented, the implication appears to be that once the person has saved another, they are “released” from their burden and can no longer see the timers. It becomes the newest person’s job to save another.

The video also features brief shots of the band performing the song casually in an apartment that appears to be above the street where the main part of the video is taking place.

Satisfaction by Rolling Stones

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

I can’t get no satisfaction, I can’t get no satisfaction.
‘Cause I try and I try and I try and I try.
I can’t get no, I can’t get no.

When I’m drivin’ in my car, and the man come on the radio.
He’s tellin’ me more and more about some useless information.
Supposed to fire my imagination.

I can’t get no. Oh, no, no, no. Hey, hey, hey.
That’s what I say.
I can’t get no satisfaction, I can’t get no satisfaction.
‘Cause I try and I try and I try and I try.
I can’t get no, I can’t get no.

When I’m watchin’ my TV and a man comes on and tell me.
How white my shirts can be.
But, he can’t be a man ’cause he doesn’t smoke.
The same cigarettes as me.

I can’t get no. Oh, no, no, no. Hey, hey, hey.
That’s what I say.
I can’t get no satisfaction, I can’t get no satisfaction.
‘Cause I try and I try and I try and I try.
I can’t get no, I can’t get no.

When I’m ridin’ round the world, and I’m doin’ this and I’m signin’ that.
And I’m tryin’ to make some girl, who tells me.
Baby, better come back maybe next week.
‘Cause you see I’m on a losing streak.

I can’t get no. Oh, no, no, no. Hey, hey, hey.
That’s what I say. I can’t get no, I can’t get no.
I can’t get no satisfaction, no satisfaction.
No satisfaction, no satisfaction.
